Valve guide replacement
« on: 13.04. 2014 10:37 »
I have a top end oil leak and convinced myself that it was the dreaded rockerbox. Looking at it further it appears the oil is coming out the exhaust port (more on the left than rightside) and travelling back along the fins.

The bike has an alloy head fitted. I did read somewhere that the guides can be a loose fit in the head and then allow oil to pass into the exhaust port.

Anyone know someone who could fit oversize guides?

Thanks

As you're in Kent, what about The  Cylinder Head  Shop? A good deal closer than SRM for you. Nothing against SRM though!

G'day Duncan.
O/S guides in +2 thou are readily available. I find that if a std guide is just loose a +2 will go in without a fuss. Put the new guide in the freezer. Heat head in BBQ (or oven if she is out shopping) to 200-250C for 30 minutes, knock the old one out if it hasn't fallen out. Replace in BBQ for another 10 minutes. The new guide will go in if you work quick or may need a gentle tap (with timber/hide or nylon drift). The guide will need to be reamed to fit the valve (an adjustable reamer that size cost $25AU). Some times the seat needs to be re-cut but I find 9/10 get away with a lap. The local mechanic should be able to do that for you ($30AU) if needed. Guide $15, reamer $25, mechanic $30 so that's about 40 quid. Saving you about 100 quid and a good feeling you DIY.

Add to that a new oven because SWMBO came home early & cought you in the kitchen & because your are at fault you an not dispute the $ 4000 you beaut oven.
This is of course after the $ 300 for taking er to dinner as she is not going to use that defiled oven any more.
Add another $ 500 for the electrician to run a new 40A circuit to the oven plus another $ 3000 for getting 3 phase supply connected. *smile*

I am lucky enough to have a wife who really wouldn't mind me putting BSA parts in the oven/dishwasher/kitchen sink *smiley4*

Thanks for  all the advice, I would love to have a go at it myself but lack the experiance with cutting tools and can foresee an engineering disaster looming, I think I will stick to just bolting things together!

Wilko- you mentioned rings, there is no smoke form the exhaust and compression is good, I had the cylinders relined to STD by T & L engineering and new pistons and rings. The oil that is forming form the leak is clean and doesn't look burnt.
