A bit of luck....
« on: 07.02. 2014 16:47 »
I was planning a trip out today since it wasn't actually raining for a change. Noticed that one of the new grips I'd put on the other day was slightly twisted....I wasn't being that hamfisted about trying to straighten it but....ping...the throttle cable snapped...at the carb end. Took the carb off carefully and luckily there was the nipple just within reach inside the head!
Realised that it was held on to the cable by just a light crimp...no solder at all, then looked at the choke cable...just the same....took the cable in one hand and the choke slide in the other and easily pulled the nipple off. Not something you'd want to come off when the engine is running!!
The bike had been rebuilt before I got it, both cables almost new but easy enough to miss something like that and it could have been very expensive....

Maybe a manufacturer who also supplies parts for the Boeing Dreamliner... Joke aside, attention to small details can prevent big disasters, as always. Cables and the simple, inexpensive stuff they're made from are amazingly important when one thinks of it, can make one stop before a danger, or accelerate away from a situation etc.

On further investigation it turns out that what I thought was just a poorly fitted nipple wasn't actually one at all...it was some sort of metal that had been heat formed/moulded directly onto the end of the cable...when I pushed the point of a scriber into the hole in it, it shattered into several pieces. The choke cable had been manufactured in exactly the same way, so I think just a cheaper way to make them.
I made brass nipples for both cables and soldered them on properly but now I'm wondering how common this is? I can't ever recall fitting a nipple onto the carb end of a cable before and maybe this method of making them is more usual than I realise?
It just seems such a tenuous way of making it....when you think where its going to go if it breaks!

Yep, I had one like that on my Gutzi clutch cable, total crap...replaced it with a brass one.

On this note when I did replace it, I think I took some pictures but forgot to post them up.
The Gutzi has a bullet type nipple soldered on that runs through a conventional 'barrel' type nipple, much better I reckon as it allows the inner to swivel a bit so to not stress it so much.
They not uncommon, my front brake cable (conical) came already set up like that.

Some reading from the old days about cables\soldering nipples

Quite a lot of cables seem to be made with this sort of lump of grunge on the ends - including several I've had for japanese bikes over the years. I guess the grunge is designed not to drop off the ends if some of those bywords for reliability use them, but I'm with DuTch - I like the simple tit on the end and a separate barrel on clutches, so the thing isn't going through constant unnatural acts in operation. I have never had a clutch cable fail if made that way. But throttles are a bit harder for lack of space in the twistgrip (I've found anyway).
And the 'old ways' are the best as a10gf says - not too much heat - that'll kill them as burnt strands are brittle - and a decent flux to get things squeaky clean. I make most of mine using bits of brass rod cut to size, countersunk on the side that matters, with the cable end tinned and well splayed and dunked in a 'soldering pot' as often as not. It's becoming a forgotten skill, but is actually easy after the first couple of tries. Very satisfying too. Quite useful cable-making kits can be had from a number of sources - and if things go wrong, at least we know who to blame!

Cast on nipples have been standard for decades and in most cases are vastly stronger than a soldered on nipple.
Cheap shit made in China to "look exactly like this" then flogged off on evil bay is a recient occurence because
THERE IN NO PART SO BADLY MADE OR POORLY FITTING THAT IT WILL NOT BE FITTED TO AN ENGLISH MOTORCYCLE IF IT IS CHEAP ENOUGH"

And they keep on making it because we keep on buying it then the quality parts suppliers go out of businesss then it is all we can get and then we wonder why all this has happened.

Reading the current thread about barrels that don't fit and the explanation about the quality, or lack thereof, of the original BSA machining and having seen the age of some of the machinery that was sold in the auction when the factory closed down, I don't think that building it down to a price and making it on the cheap is anything new. A lot of the replacement parts we fit on the bikes nowadays are of infinitely better quality than the originals, but, as you say, some folk like to stay true to BSA's original philosophy.

Hi Gerry,
"Super Practic" twistgrips are fairly standard fare on Italian bikes

I like them  *smile* they do not always have the bolt up clamp just a normal one
Their advantage is that the cable is not bending as the throttle is operated

Hi John, Thanks for that fella. WOW not cheap eh? But then its NOS so extra rare. Mine came off a 67 250cc Starfire I am told. Got it at a swap meet and bought it because I had never seen one before. Haven't fitted it as the one on the A10 is a Feridax key locking one. What with that and the yoke lock I feel a bit better when parked somewhere. Cheers. Gerry
