Servicing 1954 A7
« on: 06.04. 2014 12:07 »
Hiya lads I wonder if anyone can help?
I have just purchased a 1956 a10 rocket with a 1954 A7 engine. It turns out I am very much out of my depth with my purchase and need some advise please. I live in Rochdale I have a large garage with bike lift and lots of tools, but in this case not much Idea.
Is there anyone around my area that would have a look at it and to bring it up to a reliable bike.
I am happy to pay for your services. If it would be better I could deliver it to you.
Failing that can anyone recommend a garage that could have a look at it.
It would be good to watch someone and learn how to do different jobs in the future. I would hate to ruin a nice bike through lack of knowledge.
Many thanks jim

Hello, welcome aboard. Take a look in this section > http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?board=17.0 , you'll find owners manuals and service sheets, and recommended books. For example, lots of useful info in http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=454.0

About the practical use of the forum, see the info pages, for example enter location.

Moved topic to members & bikes, as it's not a specific engine issue \ question.

Gidday Jim- there's a Rochedale near Brissy too... if you're not a drinker you soon may be ! *eek*

Maybe it left the factory as a Road Rocket, but with an A7 Engine, you'd have to call it something else..may be a 'Road Star' or 'Shot Rocket' or something. *conf*... unless at some stage the cases needed replacing, then it's just a wrong number?

You need to know all this stuff before you start, even before enlisting help.
Maybe paste a piccie or two and you could have an endless list of suggestions.

You should be able to at least tell if it has (some) A10 internals by measuring the stroke with about a 6" piece of wire down the lug hole and measure the difference between top and bottom dead centres, and count the fins on the barrel- should be 8

They're a fairly simple and reasonably straight forward machine- I new Jack-S about 'em when I bought my first one in bits in '75 and still learning- you'll soon be an expert

Find yourself some literature, maybe before you pull it apart- unlike me...good luck, there's plenty of help here

Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'
Have a '74 850T Moto Guzzi since '92-best thing I ever bought doesn't need a kickstart 'cos it bump starts sooooooooo(mostly) easy

G'day getingonabi,  *welcome*.
Yes a picture says a thousand words. As duTch said count the fins on the barrels and measure the stroke. A7 cases could have A10 internals, and vise versa.
The description of your shed suggests you have worked on bikes. Just think of it as a new one with different size spanners needed. *whistle*
I'm sure if there's a member close you'll get a call.

but in this case not much Idea.

Hi there getingonabi

I agree with Musky, sounds like you know your way around two wheels, suggest you get hold of a Haynes book for A7/A10, they are a good starting point for an old bike.
There are one or two little debatable points in them but will give you all you need to know, and anything your not sure about just shout someone here will have had the same issue and will reply.
PS your not that Rochdale Cowboy are you - he must be getinonabit too  *smile*

Hello - tried a PM but "not allowed"

I live in Ramsbottom, so pretty close, used to go to Spring Court in Rochdale for my MOTs before MOTs were stopped for pre-60 bikes.

I have a plunger A10, and have had A10s since 1977, rebuilt them all, and built 2 from spares.

I would be happy to help / advise.  I work shifts so have chunks of time where I am available, though weekends are mainly spoken for by the family.

Let me know if you need my help? My email's on my profile (just checked)

adm edit: regarding PM, new members need 3 posts before it's activated. See the forum basics  Thanks

I am a retired joiner / builder so I could either pay  you for your time or pay you by doing some work in return.
many thanks jim.

Hello, the Haynes book is a very good start, will give you a very good overview. Widely available on ebay > http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=m570.l3201&_nkw=haynes+bsa+a10 or from a motorcycle parts shop.

And you've got 3 posts, PM should be active now.
