Amal 276 Set Up

I finaly got my brand new 276 carb today and was wondering if I needed the choke stuff in there..I removed the spring and the skinny plunger but can I leave the slide in?Do I need to plug the threaded hole on the top?Will it affect anything?This carb is completely new to me so please forgive the dumb questions..

Hi Drew back, I have a 54 GF with an original 276GG on it, it's been rebuilt several times and works pretty good except when on the prop stand. However even here in Southern California it won't start 1st or 2nd kick without a bit of choke, so I suggest leaving it on. Also it's handy to use when you are trying to set up the perfect mixture for your bike.

Drew,
             If you leave the choke slide in without the fittings, the choke will be permanently "on".
I will leave it to your imagination as to how the engine will behave.

Oops I did not think of it that way thank you for pointing out the obvious..Does it matter which side the float is on right now I have it on the left side and there does not seem to be any thing in the way,,I will try to get some pics later on Im like a proud papa these carbs are by no means cheap its so shiny and new..

the float bowl on the 276 on my '56 A10 is on the right (timing side)
not sure if that's correct but that's where mine is

For anyone who wonders (I did upon a time) this is how I understand it: the choke system does not by itself increase fuel but restricts normal airflow, resulting in more fuel suction for the jets, these 2 factors together resulting in richer mixture. Never had to use the choke on my a10, just a good tickling.

The original carbys had the bowl on the right but the main body and jet block were also made for this set up and were different to the left hand bowl types.
I don't think that the right hand 276 carby is made now.

FWIW

I purchased mine from Amal / Burlington Fuels a couple of yrs ago.

At that time Burlington gave the option of L/H or R/H float bowl when I placed the order

The bowl should be 7 1/2 degrees offset and can only be used on the side which it is meant for.

The bowl is level and the carby has a down draught as it should.

Now that I look at the pics I realize I dont have the mag in I hope there is clearance I sent it out for a rebuild..nuts
