Amal 276 paint finish?

I'm getting ready to rebuild the carb for my '53 A7 plunger.  After cleaning and de-greasing it appears that the carb has remnants of a silver paint finish. Would this be correct and if so,  has anyone had favorable experience with a particular type of paint that will stand up to gasoline exposure?

Not an OEM finish as far as I know. Probably a previous owner's attempt to make the dull grey more attractive without a lot of intricate polishing.
  I've found a light coat of "chrome finish" enamel with a coat of high temperature clear engine lacquer to be fairly durable and look quite effective on aluminium castings, but I think on a carb it would be very dependant on the petrol resisting properties of the lacquer.
   I intend to give the two carbs on a Daimler car I own a tidy up using this method, but with there being no tickler involved in the start-up process it would be a bad day if I had petrol running down the body.....

Sorry Dave but it's mentioned in Roy Beacon's restoration book, I came across it by accident yesterday, he talks about a silver paint finish on certain models -  can't recall the year but bet someone here knows

The 276 etc. were definitely painted silver originally, I have several with traces of paint on them.
Probably you would need to etch prime the body first and use an aluminium paint.

I've done a couple by painting them with silver engine enamel and then baking them in the oven. (another when the wife's not home job)

The result has been ok although after a couple of years they do start to go yellow around the bottom where the fuel gets on them.

Thank you all for your responses. I will probably try the silver engine paint suggestion.  I hope to post some pictures soon of what has been an overly long project.   I now have a nice little '62 B40 awaiting its turn as soon as the A7 is out of the ship.
