Choke Lever

Hi
New to the forum and just bought my first A10 Gold Flash after owning an A50 for sometime.
Very simple question If I may.
I'm picking the bike up to ride it home later this week.
The choke/air lever is on the frame at the side of the seat on the right.
Is it open when pushed as far as possible clockwise or anti-clockwise?

Is this Choke Lever open or Closed in the picture?

On my A50 it's on the handlebars and is closed anticlockwise and open clockwise.

Hi Peter

Pulling the cable inner will lift the choke slide so the lever in your pic is fully anticlockwise for off.

So with the A10 anticlockwise is open and clockwise is closed.
The opposite logic to my A50. I'll have to remember that.
As also the one up three down compared to one down three up.
All very confusing when added to my little Honda with the gears on the left and brake on the right.

Hi Peter

Not sure about the A50 but I think the choke design is similar in that the choke slide is pulled upwards against a spring and moves out of the air stream allowing more air and reducing the richness of the mixture after starting, although I have never needed to use the choke on mine even on the coldest of days. It may be that the lever design is different on the A50 which reverses the rotation (but I think would still need to pull the inner cable to turn off the choke).

All Amal carbs need the choke to be pulled up for open? Doesn't matter what bike ???  ( Now someone will mention Mk11's)

When I went to buy the bike the seller said I didn't need to choke at all to start it. So the lever is in the position in the picture for open but just wanted to make doubly sure that this was with the choke off/open so that when I pick it up to ride away I knew I was riding it in the open position.
It does start well without the choke. Does this indicate a rich set up or is this more normal with A10's?
I always need full choke on the A50 to get her going.

If your A50 needs choke and the A10 doesnt that might suggest a slightly rich setting, does to some extant depend on your climate/season too.
In the summer my bikes don't typically need choke, but for the other seasons always. But I don't know what your worldwide origin is... *????*
A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.

Hi Peter, I've got a Honda with the gear pedal reversed so its 1 up 4 down, I could sell it if you like then you'd have the full set!!
Seriously though, I've had an A65 in the past and the choke lever worked the same way as an A10 not the other way round....
