59 A10 with 928 carb
« on: 31.03. 2013 13:59 »
Hi all, Just about ready to give the GF its first start up hopefully within the next two weeks or so. I am fitting a 928 (28mm) carb with 200 main jet, 25 pilot jet (early model), needle with two light grooves and three clip grooves, 106 needle jet and 3.5 cutaway slide. Will post here as things progress and with any changes that I deem necessary during the tuning period. Should be interesting but hopefully not too interesting. I also have two slides marked 928 3 cutaway that fit the 928 exactly. Anyone got any ideas why they would be stamped 928 and not 928/930? Cheers. Gerry

Amal part numbers start with the oldest, or smallest version of the carb, which the parts fit.

928, 930 and 932 parts have 928 at the start of the number, except parts such as jets, which also fit the 600 series carbs, which are made from a smaller casting. I think those parts start with 622.

It's something like that, anyway.

Hi All'
Gerry, The attached article should help
http://amalcarb.co.uk/technical/

The /3  on the slide refers to the cutaway

Hi Thrasher, thanks for that. Hi John, Yes that's where I went after going back through a large number of posts to learn what others were doing or had done with their carbs'. Incidentally I found a needle stamped with an "S" and the Amal website doesn't mention one of those. I am wondering if it is for a different make, maybe Solex or SU's? Cheers and thanks guys. Gerry

Don't know about the "S" but you will find this http://www.jba.bc.ca/Bushmans%20Carb%20Tuning.html site most useful.

Hi Guys, OK she's a runner!!! Hell of a job to get her started at first, just a few combustions and after two or three days of wearing myself out got a friend to have a go (lot younger than me with more oomph in his right leg) got her firing for a few revs and stopped every time. Eventually got her going but only on high revs no reduced revs or tick over. Took the carb off and found the pilot jet blocked and I had cleaned it previously or so I thought. Raised the needle to the bottom notch out of the three. Now she idles beautifully but only with the air screw right in against the seat so am investing in a larger pilot jet so I can do the adjusting thing with air and throttle stop. Aint it great when you get her going for the first time after a complete rebuild!! Need to replace the old pipes and muffler/silencer and replace or repair the tank dents. But she's a goer yeehaa!! Cheers. Gerry

Great to hear mate. Just check to see that your carb doesn't have the fixed pilot jet. If you remove the air screw and look to the bottom of the hole the fixed jet is brass with a 16thou hole (this is about equal to a 20 jet). The carbs with this fixed jet also have the thread in the hole for the replaceable jet just to confuse the matter.

Hi Muskrat, Yes I did exactly that before fitting the brass screw in pilot jet, so am sure its an early carb.
Misses has gone to Sydney for a couple of weeks to help look after the grand kids so plenty of time between mowing the lawns, walking the dog, watering the shrubs, cooking (read burning) my meals and now I have my grand nephews seized Honda CR 125 dirt bike to fix. Help!!! Cheers and thanks mate. Gerry
