carby side bowl on different sides
« on: 01.06. 2013 08:34 »
Can any remember why BSA changed carby bowl sides when the MK2 A7 and A10 came out. Longstrokes bowls were on the primary side and later model A7 and A10 on the drive side.
1950-53 A10 rigid/plungers, 1958-61 A10 super rockets, 1947-50 A7 longstrokes, 1949 Star twin,
1951-54 A7 plungers, 1940s M21, WDM20s,
1948-50s B33s rigid/plunger/swingarm, 1948-50s b31s rigid/plunger/swingarm

At a guess I'd say it's easier to tickle when on the side stand.
I put the main fuel tap on that side and res on the left for the same reason.

Changed carb once upon a time (276) from primary side bowl to timing side bowl, when using the side stand got problems with flooding, never had this problem with the primary side bowl (logical, if one thinks about the float mechanism, & may all be due to too much inclination angle when on the side stand).

That's funny as I don't recall having that problem with mine. I do see how it can happen.

Terry,
I think that the A10/A7 276 carby always had the bowl on the timing side to keep the dripping fuel away from the magneto.
I haven't looked into the long stroke carby yet.

Further to the bowl location, the first A7 had the bowl on the left but in 1949 the bowl was moved to the right.
I have a 1949 & a 1950 carby, both with right hand bowls.
