Advice on Basket Case
« on: 05.06. 2012 09:00 »
Hi to all
My basket case 1947 has a longstroke YA73711 engine. Stock standard.
It also has an Amal Carburettor basket case with - 376 stamped on the body, 376  4 on the throttle slide and 376/083 on the float.
I have measured the bore and it is .973" on the manifold end.
It needs many parts, seals and a real good clean.
My frame is a 1950 ZA7S

Q - soldier on and overhaul it or replace with another carburettor, if so what is most appropriate
Q - is this a 1" or 15/16" model based on an odd bore measurement.

Many thanks
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Does your carb have an extended number stamped on the manifold. Something like 376/****?

If so, let me have the full number and I might be able to advise further.

Your bike would have been fitted with a Mark 1 Amal (sidefloat) carb ref: 276 CG, 15/16" bore. The monobloc you have sounds about the right size but you will need to experiment with jetting to set it up properly. Start with a main jet of about 250 size.

Didn't see that! 376/6 appears to be stamped on the manifold side - it may say 37616?

As beezermacc says your bike would have been fitted with a 276 carb, the 376 being fitted to later machines.     It depends how original you want it. If the carbs in poor condition I personally wouldn't bother with it, there's nothing worse than a newly restored bike that won't tick over because the carbs worn. You can buy brand new ones from Amal or Surrey Cycles.

Hi again Stephen,

Both the 376/6 and 376/16 have 1 inch bores so should work ok with your 15/16 inlet manifold as long as it's not too badly worn and that you don't intend to thrash your engine.  Make sure that the flange is flat where it mates up to the inlet manifold.

The 376/16 was fitted to the 1955 BSA A7SS so I reckon that this would be a good base to start.  Originally it was set with the following:-  270 main jet,  30 pilot jet, 3 1/2 cutaway slide, .106 needle jet and the needle on number 3 position.  I would use these settings to start with and then modify slightly if any fine tuning is required.

During the experimental stages a slightly rich mixture will be better than a slightly weak one.  It's always a little "hit or miss" when using a carb that wasn't made for the job but I'm sure that you will be able to sort it out.

Hi Stephen I have a new 276 with inch bore fitted to my 1947 and it runs great. Starts first kick once the carb bowl is tickled till full. Its only meant to be 15/16 but 1/16 diff is fine you just need to jet it for a longstroke. You can buy new amal 276s 15/16 and inch etc from a few places but they are expensive.

heres a link for surrey cycles and Draganfly

Many thanks for the advice. A new unit it is to be then and I'll offset the postage to Oz by putting the old one on eBay.
Appears a 1" 276 correctly jetted by Draganfly could be the best option.
