Longstroke cam oilbath?

Knowing the reputation for cam wear (and having a handful of knackered tappets in my parts box) of the early A7 , has anybody modified the crankcase to incorporate a "tray" below the cam to retain oil? It would be a fairly simple modification, weld in a piece of flat aluminum (maybe slightly curved) to help keep the cam lubed during use. Thoughts?

Hi Vincent, I know a engineer in Bristol has done this mod to a number of long stroke engines. In case you are interested its Gary Bowden of Bowden Auto Engineering of Patchway, Bristol, UK.

Why not get the cam and followers nitrided?
This solved the wear problems in Triumph engines.

I've not given this too much thought, but what about feeding more oil than usual to the rocker box so that oil could be encouraged to flow back down the push rods which would lubricate the cam followers? Any ideas on this?

it's a plan if you can at the same time discourage it from flowing down the exhaust valve guides *smiley4*

Hi,

My name is Rudolf, I'm new to this forum. I own a long stoke A7 built early in 1948. It actually  runs very well and smooth.

But: I do not know whether the high wear of the camshaft and the tappets occurred in all Long Strokes, or only among those which had no oil feed for the inlet rocker box as mine have.

To be safe I now will fit the inlet valve spindel also with the oil supply. I think than I´am better protected against the potential high wear of the camshaft.

Any additional advice on that?

Thanks for the warm welcome TC, yes the longstroke BSA is also my favorite for smooth and troublefree cruising with such a great sound!

here you will find all changements of the oilfeed of valves and camshaft between the longstroke variants and the later A7/A10
