4 spring clutch adjusters
« on: 07.03. 2012 20:10 »
hi all went into the shed this morning to replace my 4 spring clutch plates, what should of only been a 1 hour job ended up at 4 hours, this was due to the 4 clutch adjusters refusing to unscrew, i had the tool to fit them but they would not screw out due to the tension of the springs, every time i went to unscrew them they just sprung back, in the end i had to spot weld the tool to each adjuster to get leverage on them to over come the tension of the spring when removing,  anyone had this problem , *conf*

This sounds like someone had deepened the notch at both ends of the springs, cups and caps, to stop cap adjusters undoing, the ends of the spring dig into the notches and make it a devil of a job to undo as you've found. I've not had this problem as I have only lightly tapped the notch so that I could undo the cap adjusters at a later date.

Glad its sorted Mal... shallow notches is what is needed as you've found. Also examine the ends of the springs so that they 'butt' up to the notch. I have in the past just lightly filed off the sharp point at the end of the springs. The idea is to prevent the adjuster nuts from coming undone.  wink2

That's raised an interesting thought Trev... I wonder if the rotation and vibration of the clutch drum would undo the adjusting nuts if the springs were wound in the incorrect spiral/direction. Thinking about this there must be a right and wrong way for the springs to be produced?

????   I'm confused here... & yes I know.. it's not hard to do...   *eek*
I had a look at my clutch spring nuts & yes they have a tag / lip under the head of the nut...
BUT the nut shaft is too thick to go down the centre of the clutch spring..

The spring sits snuggly into the cup, so I'm thinking the springs are right...

Are the clutch adjusting nut shafts ment to protrude into the spring ???

Wrong clutch Wozza. Rockthedog has a four spring, like in the pic I've attatched.

Your clutch is a six spring and shouldnt have the screw type nuts in your pic. You should have two 1/4" nuts on each thread

Those three nuts on the clutch in your pic are the four spring type, they dont belong anywhere on your bike.

Yours should look like this.

And to make life a bit easier, buy a set of 6 off 1/4" BSF nyloc nuts.
