Lucas underslung pilot headlight shell for sale part SS700P/1

Hello,

The wrong headlight came with my 1956 A10 project. Pics attached. I can see from other postings these are quite rare now but also that aftermarket versions are available from British Only Austria for those who don't need 100% original, for circa 70 euro plus freight. I don't really know what this one is worth (I guess its worth most to someone who HAS to have the original item) so comments welcome on that please or make me an offer if you want it  - but please bear in mind I would like to more than cover the cost of a replacement shell (and rubber tube) as this is the only headlight shell I have for my project bike! 

As one can see in the pics I think this shell was fitted originally to a BSA A10 as it has the original beige colour under a layer of black and undercoat. As far as I can tell without removing all the paint it has no dents, cracks and is not bent or distorted or rusted, it is in good condition.

The shell is in New Zealand so please check what the freight will come too.

I can list this on ebay as a "buy now via my sisters account (she has lots of sales and good feedback) if that is preferred - I do not have any feedback history on ebay (only the local equivalent "Trademe.co.nz").

          That's from a '53-'54 cowl headlight, pretty rare nowadays.
If you are fitting a cowl to your '56 you may have a bit of difficulty getting the right shell.

For any Oz owners i have a spare replacement lense for an underslung type headlight, still in box.Strangely it seems to be made of a solid type plastic instead of glass?

Hi trevinoz yes I have a cowl for a 56 but I'm interested in what you know about getting the right shell for a 56 do you know the Lucas part number by any chance? Is the one I need rare as well ? (I hope not) I guess the speedo cable goes through the correct shell like it does on underslung one?

Brian that shell on BOA is 95euro  (crazy or the going rate!?) and looks pretty rusty and is listed as for a plunger but my bike is swing arm does that make a difference?

I'll go see if the pilot lens on the shell is glass or plastic later

The Lucas book says a SS700P was used from 55' to 57' so the shell would be the same for both plunger and s/arm models.

?95 for that one at BOA is top money, I guess it comes down to if you want an original or would be happy with one of the repro ones. I have used repro headlights on a few bikes and they are quite good, usually just need repainting. You could buy one of these and just use the shell. The shell is hidden inside the cowl anyway so you dont see much of it.

Hi Brian - that link to boa shows an underslung type light at 49eur but I thought I needed one without the underslung pilot? That's why Im selling the oem light I already have

And more confusion! The following link shows what looks like the same light you found but at 69 eur or am I missing where they differ in the pics?

Yes you do need the one without the underslung pilot light.

I dont know why that second one is dearer, the only thing I can think is that maybe it has a genuine shell, for an extra ?20 there must be some difference.

It might be worth e-mailing them and asking if they have the one you need in a repro.

            The shell you want is the same except for the pilot light.
You could always remove the pilot from the one you have and fill the hole with metal shaped to suit.
I have seen it done but requires a bit of skill to make a job of it.
Possibly you could get hold of a late 60s shell without the panel and cut the holes to suit.

     i am in need of the bulb holder parts for my 1954 A10plunger,i have the correct lamp with the under slung park light,but it is empty inside?,can you help please,

I have the same underslung head lamp on my 1953 B33, The lamp was not really a success as the bulb was too dimly lit. I found that to put in a high density LED improved matters considerably. A 10mm LED from Maplins are only about £1.39 and a 150 oHm resister seems to work pretty well. The lamp also stays on while head light is on as well.
