Wanted 16" 40 hole rims
« on: 24.09. 2011 16:45 »
I'm in need of a pair of 16x3.00 or 16x3.50 (or one of each even) 40 hole wheel rims if anybody has any laid around.
Not too fussed about the chrome, as they're gonna get powder coated black, as long as they're not pitted.
It seems a waste to buy shiny new ones and then have them blasted and coated.
Would consider complete wheels if they're cheap enough.
Thanks peeps.

OK, this could be nasty and even dangerous, but I encountered an odd looking BSA rear wheel at an autojumble a few years ago. It was 16" and off an M20 chop. The guy selling it said it was a VW bus rim that had the middle cut out and had then been drilled for spokes. It was certainly inventive and would probably be considered "Old School" these days. I believe VW bus wheels came in a variety of sizes.
Cheers,
Iain

Errr..., thanks for that Iain, but I was more wanting bike rims, with pre-drilled holes, for to lace up to hubs, like.

Pretty certain Sunbeams had 16" wheels if you can find any, otherwise Central Wheels sell bare steel rims if you cant find any s/h.

Hows it going or are you still just collecting bits?

Ey up mate, how ya goin?
Looked at Central Wheels, but they're nearly 70 quid each in bare steel, which gave my inner Yorkshireman a nasty fright!
Will just have to bite the bullet if I can't find any S/H ones, though.
Still collecting bits at the mo, gonna start mocking up a rolling chassis soon, but I can't decide if I like 16s front and rear, or the more usual 21/16 combo.
Got a '48 longstroke engine off Barnsley Shaun, and have collected around 75% of the bits to rebuild it, so progress is being made, slowly.

Don't know what they're worth now but Central Whls also do the Morad alloys in 16". I'm running 2.5x16" front and rear in the tourismo cross style because they're strong. But I'm also running 3.5x16 dunlop sidecar racing tyres and have shortened my fork springs.
I also understand sunbeam S7 rims are a 3x16. Harleys use 3.5x16
with 2nd hand rims watch out for rust!
16's do drop the bike right down unless your planning to compensate via extended forks. An advantage of a 16 front would be its easier to brace the stanchions, which beesa forks would appreciate if extended. I run a fork brace and the stock legs take quite a lot of abuse  from the twisting chairs dish out.

Bare with me my Quaker pal.  This could be a definite, absolute positive maybe!!

I have a pair in the lockup but I don't know if they are 16" or 17".  I'll check them out later today.

That sort of looks like a drop center HD rim. Drilling them can be a nightmare. Being so thick, if the angle of the hole is just a little off the spokes will curve. Don't ask how I know. *red*

Ok, checked 'em out but they are 40 hole X 17 inch X 3.25.

Probably off a BSA C15 but I'm not sure.  Sorry to build your hopes up.
