Gearbox Removal?

Dear All,
Back from a few days away, the garage has warmed up a bit & I've had another go at the A10 (1961).. At this stage I was hoping to be on the re-assembly side of things. Things went well to start with, a few jobs ticked off the list...

However.....

I thought I'd just drain the gearbox oil to check what state PO had left it in (& whether it was full of grease like everywhere else..!) Gawd knows what length of bar he used to do the drain plug up with but it won't budge (not exactly pristine either, nicely rounded...) Either that or Hematite  / thread lock has been used!
As I'm not happy with gearchange I thought I might try & remove it & dismantle it on the bench rather than in situ..

Question: can you ge the thing out without removing the motor or half the rest of the bike??

I think it's a No Adrian, probably could be done if you remove the rear engine plate on the timing side, to do that maybe the Magneto would have to come off too.

I've just checked the photo records of my strip and found that I took the gearbox out by removing the upper halves of the gearbox plates on the timing side and drive side, without disturbing the lower gearbox plates, engine plates or magneto.  Of course the clutch was off as well, but maybe not the inner primary, although mine was off at the time. Hope this helps.

The primary side is already off to sort the clutch and various leaks out so I'll have a go at getting the 'box out as well.. What started as a tidy up has now developed into a full-scale strip down!!..
Still, I did that 15 years ago with my Velo and that has stood me well - it's very badly in need of attention now though as I've ridden the wheels off it which is why I need to get the A10 sorted!
Hopefully I'll get the 'box out without removing the mag, I really don't want to go down the route of starting on the engine area..

have made a start loosening the upper g/box plate bolts but am not convinced that they're going to come out without removing other things (like the mag) which I don't want to do..

Could you check your log to see that you did get the box out easily? I don't disbelieve you but it doesn't look easy & I don't want to end up with it half out and not be able to ge  it back again!!

Has anyone else done this please?

Hi Adrian,

I've recently removed the gearbox without to much problem, didn't have to remove engine or mag. From memory I removed the top two gearbox plates and the through bolt underneath and out she came.

If the photo attched itself, don't worry about the missing barrel and head theses were removed for a different reason.

That's brilliant, many thanks... I've already got the oil pipes & tank out as I wanted to flush the sludge out of the bottom of the latter.. I guess I just needed a bit more courage!! Back in the garage after work tomorrow!
