Where have the gears gone?

Hi

I have a plunger '52 A10, went for a ride yesterday and all was well until I attempted to change down from top gear.... nothing happened... Gear leaver moves freely but no change... luckily I managed to ride home in top.

Any suggestions? what is best to check first?

You will need to take the outer G/B cover off, check gear lever return spring and or split pin on selector fork.
This happened to me a couple of years ago, one leg snapped off the spring, although I did not lose all the gears.

Is this fairly straight forward? I had a burman box apart recently and found it a challenge!

Welcome to the forum. Here are a few pictures http://www.a7a10.net/gearbox1.htm so you can see what will meet you in there. Disassembling to check the gear change mechanism is not difficult. Good luck.

Pretty straightforward Alistair. Easier than playing with Burmans. Did one the other week (one arm on the spring had bust, same as Bill's), and - if that's all that's up with it, it's pretty easy. Just whip off the outer, and you can do it in half an hour if there's nothing else funny in there. Drain oil, have usable gasket to hand or paper to make one, replace spring and cover, refill with slime, and job done.
I bought a couple of spare springs while I was on . . .

Just a thought Alistair
If you haven't done this before a tip is to use the clutch operating arm to stop the kick start from unwinding, just let the clutch arm stick out away from the box when you take the clutch cable off, hold the kick start as you pull the outer gearbox cover off and then let it rotate forward till it meets the clutch arm, you will see what I mean when you do it.

Plenty of helpful advice... looks like 'I'm going in'. Replacing the Burman g/box cover required either 3 arms, patience or 'the knack'... sadly I lacked all 3 but persistance won!

I will let you know how I get on...

Before you dive in have a quick look underneath.
If the detent spring ( hidden under the big hex cap ) is loose collapsed or missing the gear change cam plate can not "lock" into place so the gearshift dogs can move it back wards & forwards but not change gears.
