I’m just going to to take it apart and find out what’s wrong because I’m going to be selling it and you can’t ride it like this because of the amounts of smoke it puts out and it will sometimes eventuallly foul the plug so if you used it as it was you could get stranded somewhere

Have you taken it for a long run yet?  If it's wet sumping the oil will pump back to the tank then it will run fine and if the rings need bedding in then it no use running it for short periods, it has to do some work.  I wouldn't go stripping it down yet, there's always a risk of damage and without a decent run it not clear whether there is actually a problem.

If you're taking it apart anyway fit some Gandini piston rings. I had similar problems as you until I fitted a set of Gandini rings (following the advice of members of this forum) - instant success!
