BSA the white stuff is because of moisture reacting with the zinc in the carb . edit ,,   forgot to mention the dreaded moisture absorbing ethanol doesn't help at all.

Of course the ethanol. Like a chemical bath sponge. Well let's just say Thursday in weather terms was rather 'moist' at least the mag etc was unaffected. Looks likely some of that crud was in the pilot circuit.

I think ethanol in fuel has a lot to answer for.  Its surprisingly reactive and seems to attack quite a lot of materials and absorbing water just adds another element.  When they upped the ethanol in diesel (which they keep quiet about) my Land Rover injection pump turned into a sieve with leaks everywhere.
On my A10 the Concentric pilot circuit was solid and nothing would budge it. I drilled the fixed jet out, tapped the carb body and fitted the earlier threaded jet so I can now poke it though.

I always turn the petrol taps off before arriving home and allow the engine to run untill the carbs empty out. this prevents crud from drying out in the pilot Jet. Seems to work so far.

G'day Fellas.
Australia the lucky country. Two grades of fuel with zero ethanol! 95 & 98 I use in everything plus octane boost to 107 plus Stabil ( https://tinyurl.com/5a6kw7kp ) and a bit 1:500 castrol R to keep it fresh for a year. Fill the tank today, good to go when I want (even in the lawn mower).
