Rear full width hub etc (A10 1959)
« on: 29.07. 2024 10:27 »
Hi guys,

Just putting new bearings, chain and rear sprocket on my bike.

Looking at the parts diagram, it shows a small dust cover inside of the hub (no.9 in the pic). How does this work? - it doesn’t seem tight against anything and free to move along the spindle.

I’ve put sealed bearing in so is it still required and if so, do I have it right as per pics.

Cheers Craig

Cutaway drawing on Service Sheet 212E indicates this cover 42 6328, listed as "Cap", is pressed into the empty hub from the chainwheel end, seating on a ledge halfway down the bore. It acts a grease retainer of sorts, and also serves to centralise the bearing distance piece 42 6323 as the main spindle is inserted from the other end of the hub. As such it rotates with the wheel hub, and is a sliding/loose fit on the distance piece.

As Swarfy says. Have you looked inside the hub to see it its still in there?

Thanks guys,

I’ve posted pics of what I have. I’ve had a look at the service sheet but to be honest I can’t make sense of the diagrams.

Ill have a look in the morning to see if I can get it to lock into the ledge you mention - I didn’t see one but then again I wasn’t really looking as it didn’t make much sense to me.

As I have now put sealed bearing in, would it still be required?

Cheers

BSA were never very good with some of their line diagrams, this service sheet also details the earlier alloy Ariel type hubs to be a right old mish-mash of instructions.

Late cast iron full width hub gets just a whopping 4 line mention. The clue is in the last line....

"There  is a smaller grease retainer midway along the centre distance tube."     That's the fella.

Bore of the hub tapers, so push it down until it stops on the ledge.

With a sealed bearing it is not strictly necessary, with open bearings I doubt if it was effective anyway. Its main advantage is to aid the insertion of the main spindle, without it the bearing distance tube spacer can drop down if the bearing inner races move apart, blocking the path of the spindle through the hub.

Yes, I'm not sure it ever did much "dust covering" but it is handy to align the spindle.  I think BSA were sometimes a bit lazy with their descriptions.

Great info (as usual) cheers.

That explains it. It was missing, so when I’ve tried to realign the spindle in the past it was a ‘sometimes lucky, sometimes not’ exercise.

I’ll get back out in the shed to have another look.

…..I’ll let you know 👍

I eventually left the dust cover’ out, I couldn’t see anyway to stop it drifting along the distance tube.

Bike is back together….I’ll hopefully get out on it later today to see if everything is good.

Thanks everyone for your help
