Allright - found my second piston after removing the sump plate.

worty talking of ball bearings , remember that one stuck in your camshaft oil delivery hole , that was a great mystery.

No mate, not yet, last thing I found was a nub end and a bit of polystyrene cup from yer mushy peas *wink2* *wink2* *whistle* *whistle*

Still makes me blood boil when I see the fruits of RM's labours.  HOW can you leave a ball bearing loose in an engine??

Determined to find that Brough at the back of an old farmer's barn who's chucking it out as scrap *grins* *grins*

I take it the stepped liners were inserted from the bottom after the flange surface was milled flat to land the step. Is that correct?

Yes Richard that is exactly what was done with the liners being brazed in if I remember correctly. It was more than 25 years ago.
The liners were an interference fit.
