First built in 1914 the Obice 305/17 (commonly known as Iron Horses) were Italian-built howitzers employed on the Isonzo/Italian Front during the First World War. These howitzers weighed 34 tons including the carriage to transport it. The wheels were thin enough to be mounted on rails but Bonagente tracks were installed when on the muddy ground. The howitzer itself was 305mm (the largest Italian calibre of WWI) and took more than 5 minutes to reload. 44 were built and most were captured by the Austro-Hungarians. None survive today
