The problem as I see it is that everyone who ends up in power screws it up. I couldn't stand Thatcher! Her supercilious, arrogant, self-entitled, smug attitude, and her desire to sacrifice us plebs on the altar of profit for herself and her mates, was stomach-churning at best (Poll Tax). She has to be one of the most reviled characters in UK politics ever, although some still think she was great (many Russians still see Stalin as a great man
).
On the other hand, people like Scargill were so intent on blackmailing the country, that UK industry eventually priced itself out of world markets. As I understand, it was cheaper to ship Chinese coal to the UK than pulling the black stuff out ourselves. The unions lost the plot, and industry couldn't function with the constant strikes over pay, conditions, and the colour of the local cat. Unions have had, and do, have their uses, but holding the country to ransom wasn't going to end well. I was never a union member until I worked in a secondary school where my boss tried to bully me. After walking out of a meeting when she turned on me, I decided I needed to watch my back, and joined as a bit of insurance - she left the school soon after??
So, what to do? I can't stand the Tories and want them out, but I also can't stand the idea of voting for a Labour govt with the insidious threat of unionism constantly present. I also can't stand Starmer or his potty-mouthed deputy Angela Rayner.
In the end, it may be voting for who I dislike the least. The Tories need to be punished for their despicable behaviour, especially Johnson and his constant lying, so it may have to be Labour this time. What we need is a political party that has some honesty and integrity, and will see through policies that are genuinely of benefit to the country. Whilst I wait for that, I'm going on a search for some hen's teeth.
