No, this is a Turbo!

P-47 - in case you are bored, this is the turbo supercharger system in the P-47. Many aircraft engines used mechanically driven superchargers, often connected directly to the crankshaft, with multiple compressor stages and two-speed transmissions. Conversely, some designs incorporated turbo-superchargers, powered by exhaust gas pressure. Turbo-superchargers, having numerous advantages, didn't require direct coupling to the engine. For instance, the turbocharger in the Republic P-47 fighter was a full thirty feet behind the engine, tucked away aft of the pilot in the rear fuselage.

 WHAT!!!!! It actually flies....

Lockheed got even cleverer with the P38 Lightning,  featuring a turbo supercharger fitted to each engine. Must have been an air mechanics nightmare, but I reckon one of the fastest things in the sky in the Pacific Theatre.

Lot of disadvantages with that P47 set-up. Wonder what the reason was for choosing that layout?

Bergs I reckon you're a bad influence on me.  Your constant references to alcohol are giving me a thirst and its only 10am!

Frank Whittle was the clever guy who realised that you didn't need the reciprocating bit between the turbocharger and the exhaust. Just a paraffin heater.
