Hello all!
« on: 07.09. 2023 20:05 »
Hi all. Thought I'd introduce myself. I have recently purchased this lovely 58 A10. I absolutely love it! Hadn't planned on buying it. A friend of a friend in the village bought it to me to have a look at some electrical issues and I just fell in love with it!

I'd like to do something to upgrade the brakes at some point, apart from that I intend to keep it exactly as it is.

Any suggestions for brake mods welcome. I have a lathe and mill, so not scared of making bits and adapting.

Thanks!

yes mate get some great big hob nailed boots ,  *welcome* apart from that if your lathe is big enough put the wheels in and true the drums up than get some soft linings , or you could show us a pic or two, we like pics . if the brakes are full width hub carry an anchor and throw that out, only joking  *beer*

I have had success with 3 different BSA (one actually an Ariel brake) front brakes simply by ensuring the leading shoe contacts first, the way I did this was to build up the leading shoe where it contacts the cam by (say) 1mm, using weld. This mod only lasts a few thousand miles tho.

I did not find “contouring” the shoes to fit the drum diameter helped (sand paper stuck to drum method). It takes a fair while as well 🙄

I’ve been meaning to reverse the lever on the drum, but have not got around to it yet. This may make the mod to shoe last longer.

I’ve also had poor rear brakes where nothing seems to improve them, new shoes make no difference, nor the mod to the leading shoe, but I recently fitted “girling mk2” shoes from Draganfly to my B44, and they improved the rear a fair bit, can now lock the wheel at low speeds

The usual route is to fit a twin leader from an A65. Lots of info on the forum about this. It makes quite a difference.
2 twins, 2 singles, lots of sheep
