Recent points and plates are very badly made.  That pin comes loose, making the gap disappear, or the contact comes loose on the end of the arm.

Yep its no wonder it ran like a total bag of the proverbial, I'm surprised it ran at all there was so much movement in that pivot pin. Not sure how I'd managed to miss it so far, I've fiddled around there plenty.
