A10 plunger qd hub bearings installation
« on: 28.10. 2021 09:18 »
Bought some new bearings for my a10 qd crinkle hub, assembled them as what I thought was correct to the "bsa parts diagram",however if you assemble the flanged side of the internal spacer on the splined drive side of the hub(as how I interpreted the diagram?!)the bearing on the splined side sits proud and the one the other side is too far in???,so after much cussing and time I removed them and put spacer in the other way round and now it seems correct, however again! If I press the bearings together with tool I made they bind and won't turn freely so had to tap one of the bearings back slightly and then they turn smoothly.Does this sound normal people's any advice appreciated?!!!

Are you sure the wheel is from a plunger?  Plunger hubs have two bearing locking rings. S/A Crinkle hubs only have one. All locking rings are L/H Thread. Wheel bearings are the same for both hubs.

Datum for these hubs is the circular bearing support ring 65-5884 described as a thrust washer. This goes into the hub first, on the chainwheel side. Follow with the bearing and locking ring. This  needs to be reasonably tight, holding the bearing against the support ring, itself being seated on a machined ledge within the hub tube. This bearing sets the position of all the other parts. Add the central spacer from the other side, then the bearing and locking ring.

The problem is that the latter outer race in both cases is not supported, in fact the Service Sheet for the Plunger Hub recommends moving the race into the hub, allowing the central spacer to push out the left hand bearing.  Over tightening the right hand side locking ring on the plunger hub puts sideways load on the bearing as you have found. It just needs a dab of thread lock and a light nip up. This is why the later S/A hub dispenses with the ring, and in effect here the outer race simply finds its happiest position.  No special tools are needed, a look at service Sheets 212C and 212D reveals all.

It's deffo a plunger hub and does have the lh locking rings either side.i hadn't found a service sheet for hub I was using the parts diagram on draganfly website as a guide, appears to show spacer tube a certain way  in hub but if I assemble it that way it seems all a bit ass backwards!.It does have the thin thrust washer in hub,the bearings are in there now with only the splined side locking ring slightly proud perhaps 1 thread, makes more sense now with your explanation.

Von d... Revisited this thread after considering size dimensions for the chainwheel spindle requested.

Plunger hub central spacer 67 6061 has two pressed on locating  "starwasher" retainers to stop the spacer dropping down into the hub when the spindle is removed. One star retainer is at the end of the spacer, one slightly further away from the end. This end faces the chainwheel side of the hub, allowing clearance between the bearing support ring 65 5884. Early S/A hub uses the same bearings, same support ring, but a different spacer that fits into the bore of the bearings and consequently a thinner rear spindle is required.

Crinkle hubs all use the same bearings, so a later A65 type hub with speedo drive can be fitted  to a plunger bike without too much hassle, using the plunger spacer. A65 bearing locking ring needs a slight enlargement of the bore to clear the plunger chainwheel spindle boss, or use the right part, 67 6076. LH thread.
