After rebuilding the A10 I have been disappointed at the handling it feels a real dog.  So I checked the wheel alignment with bits of string and wooden blocks and that was fine.  Since I only re-greased the bearing I thought maybe one of those might have gone west.  The front was OK and so was the rear.  But when I was checking the rear I noticed the hub moved left and right  (no twist) between the chain sprocket and the brake back plate. 

First I thought I have missed a spacer but on checking I have everything even though the dust cap is battered.

So part on the axel from left to tight are
Rear wheel spindle 42-6320
Washer (outside swinging arm). 42-6336
Distance piece  42-6330
Bearing retainer 42-6335
Wheel Bearing 42-5819
Distance piece 42-6323
Centring collar 42-6329
Dust cap 42-6328
Hollow spindle 42-6325
Grease retainer 42-6105
Sprocket Bearing 89-3022
Collar 42-6324
Washer (outside swinging arm) 42-6078
Spindle nut 42-6077

So do I Just keep tightening the spindle or do I need an additional spacer and if so where do I put it?

I thought I could put an additional washer between the brake back plate and the distance piece but getting the distance piece in is very difficult as it is very tight.

Judging by the picture, collar 42-6324 doesn’t have the right thickness. Can’t check for the moment but to me it doesn’t look thick enough.

The only dimensions I could find for 42-6324 are from Fecked.
Width: 7/16" (11.5mm)
OD: 2" (50.2mm)
ID: 13/16" (20.7mm)
If it measures up right I'd tighten it up more and see if the play diminishes.

Just measured the collar and it is 11.5 mm thick.

The wheel bearing is 14mm

The spindle is 69.7mm

I have ordered new bearings and dust seal and i will try again.

The swinging arm is new and no play.

The wheel spindle seems to fully screw into the hollow spindle on the sprocket.  So it seems that I am not putting any tension on the swinging arm.  If needs must I will put an extra washer on the outside of the wheel that should allow me to tighten the spindle more.

The funny thing is the brake back plate and sprocket do not move only the cast full width hub.

Had similar situation once, could not tighten up the wheel spindle, found out that the spindle was bottoming out on grease, so removed excess grease and cured problem
1960 Super Rocket, owned since 1966, back on the road 2012 after being laid up for 29yrs.

That was such a cool suggestion that I rushed out and checked.  Alas the hole is free of bulk grease and the spindle screws right inside as far as the bottom. 

The bearing is a very tight fit and I wondered if it had a seized wheel bearing if it could have ground into the seat of the hub.  But then the hub is iron and whilst it would be possible on an alloy hub this would result in a very big diameter hole in the hub and the bearing would rattle about.  It does not.

Does the sprocket side have any movement? It must be solid but sprocket spins. The bearing is a press fit.
From your picture the long spacer is the wrong way around. The large end goes to the right side.
Another topic to look at https://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=9679.0 although the pic is of the wrong hub but the description is correct.

As your parts list is correct all I can add are some photos (for you to compare) from when I fitted a new sprocket, bearings, etc. on my s/a. May help.

Hi All
Check the wheel bearing in the iron hub for lateral movement
If the lock ring has not been fixed with a small split/ cotter pin they loosen and wear on the brake plate
There should be a steel ring fitted to the hub before the bearing is fitted, if missing it would display your bikes symptoms

New bearings and grease/dust covers seem to have solved the problem. However, I have noticed a crack in the hub *sad2*. So I have put locktight on the retaining ring and are busy trying to find a replacement.

Hi all, new member here! I've just bought a 59 A10 Golden Flash and, although it is previously restored, I'm busy stripping and rebuilding, mainly just for peace of mind. I have a question about the rear hub and spotted this thread and rather than duplicate I thought it best to chip in. I hope the OP doesn't consider I'm hijacking!
My question is, should there be a spacer between the sprocket and the hub bearing? Something like 3 inches long. The reason I'm asking is there is one on my bike but it looks very homemade, it's had an internal taper turned at one end, presumably to make location by the spindle easier. There is no mention in the manual about fitting a spacer and it's not the easiest of tasks as you have to put it in place before fitting the hub to the sprocket and pray it stays put long enough to get the spindle through.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm guessing it's 42-6323? I've just found an exploded diagram on Draganfly and if I'm reading it correctly there may be some pieces missing, 6328 and possibly 6329? Also it looks like the spacer should have a step at one end and is inserted from the brake side?

First photo shows the A10 iron hud spindle assembly, less 42 6328. Arrow shows 42 6329

Second shows 42 6329, the spacer on which the bearing sits.

Last photo arrow shows 42 6328 in situ.

Thanks for those pics. They confirm there is something amiss with mine. My 6323 is certainly missing the flange, the question is has it been taken off the diameter or, more importantly, the length.
