Kickstart Quadrant
« on: 05.06. 2023 09:24 »
Just revisited some earlier posts about the differing kickstart quadrants, pinions and return springs. This can be a bit of a conundrum when the kickstart jams, but rest assured all the information you need to sort it is there somewhere.

As an aside, while most of the kickstart parts will swap between Rigid, Plunger and S/A Gearbox types, the early flat Clockspring type will only work with a splined shaft to the quadrant. A later conventional coil spring can be used with any quadrant, but this will foul on the internal webs of the earlier outer cover casting. These will need removal to use a later spring, along with its spacer as well as some arrangement to secure the spring to the casing...clockspring uses a peg, later spring uses a nut and bolt. All parent castings have the same casting number, part number change reflects the different machining operations to suit later design.

It is probably easier if upgrading an early rigid or plunger kickstart to use the later plunger gearbox outer cover along with the later S/A pointed teeth quadrant and matching pinion. Recognise the cover by a grease nipple on the clutch arm and external nut for that spring bolt, both absent from early versions. S/A gearbox castings are different entirely, so leave well alone.

Goes without saying that pointy/late and flat top/early parts do not mix, many sellers are oblivious that two types exist.

 Swarfy.

OK, I've read the study material and I'm ready to take the exam.  *smile*
