Black 'n Gold Rex... anything else was an aberration! Coloured ones (1 in 50 ?) were a sop to a few misguided young pups of indeterminate gender who fancied 'colours' of all things. I mean Colours!!! My gawd, what next... easy starting?!
As you say Rex, the crankcases are bolted up with 4 thou preload, which aligns and beds the taper-rollers in nicely. Shims are fitted behind the bearings to adjust. And as you mention, the oil pump fitting as with the mains are a tricky fit. It's sophisticated technology though... you heat the crankcases to the point where your spit will sizzle on the surface -then things will slip in together. (None of your fancy infrared thermometers here!)
