residual magnetism in old dynamos

I get no juice but my field/armature ohm meter check-out seems correct.  I've worked with old industrial alternators that have sat for a while and they often need to be 'flashed' because there is no residual magnetism left from the last run. 
Since this hasn't run in 70 years should I assume the same or am I missing something obvious? Perhaps buy a magnet and slap it on the housing near the field coil?

If I understand correctly, all you need to more or less do is flash it. Should bring it back to life unless it's kaput...

So I understand how commutator facets 180 degrees opposite are connected.  But all the facets seem to be connected to each other. How does that work?  Clearly I'm missing something obvious.

All of the coils in a lap wound armature are connected in series, the joint being made at the commutator.
Just motor the generator and it will come back to life if the armature is OK. Be aware that a bad armature may motor but not generate.
