Special tool for installing valve guides?
« on: 02.11. 2022 13:11 »
All my life, I've been blessed with old bikes with good valve guides.  I now have a cylinder head with 3 good guides in place and one new replacement exhaust guide to fit into the vacant space.  (One wonders what could have led to this situation after a mere 12K miles but I guess we can blame everything in it being one of the first dread first 500.)
I assume I run a spinning wire brush in to clean it up.
I don't want to distort the metal by driving the guide in with a hammer.  My first thought would be to suck it in with a long fine threaded bolt.  My big fear is that it gets halfway in and goes no further, so a grease might be involved.
Or do I need a special tool  None of my books show anything and my search of back Forum posts came up empty.  I have a a spare new intake valve that I can modify as a driving tool. Do I put the head in the oven and the guide in the freezer and do it right quick.
And the good news is that crankshaft #3 is crossing the pond as we speak.  My machinist awaits.

i use a steel punch machined to fit into the guide with a brass cushion on it so when it is hit the brass cushions the force on the guide. heat up the head / guide in freezer and away you go

G'day Brandis.
As per berger I heat the head to 200 C and freeze the guide. I assume you have a ci guide. Make a driving tool that goes in the guide 3/4 depth with a few thou clearance. Make sure you have it all set up before you start (flat timber and rags for head, tool inserted in guide, gloves for hands, FBH). It may start to grab 1/2 way in but a few good clouts with the FBH will see it home. Once done you will probably need to cut the valve seat.
Best of luck.

If you are going to use the stepped punch then freeze both the guide & the punch thus the extra thermal mass will keep it smaller for longer
It also gives you a handle to hold it with that will not heat up the guide .

A tools-in-the-room solution.  Find the perfect drill bit and . . .   Drill slides in further.
Note the BFH.
