A7 ss kick start
« on: 08.08. 2022 15:53 »
Hi Thanks for letting me join , i have a 1960 A7ss shooting star and i unfortunately put diesel into her withought realising , 1/4 mile later and she stopped , drain fuel tank , clean carb fresh fuel and a run and no harm done , but now the oil tank seams too full so a change to be done , but the problem is before realising it wad diesel i kicked it over trying to restart many times and since then when the bike starts the kick start stays down below the silencer, and if you pick it up it flops back down , if the bike is not running you can pull it back up and it stays in its natural position , help please before i pull it tp bits and what parts i may need thanks mike

Just sounds like the kickstart spring is broken. If the kickstart just 'falls' down without any resistance it is definitely the spring. Remove the gearbox outer cover by undoing the four nuts and three screws. Leave the kickstart and gear lever attached as they don't need to be removed. You may need to remove the footrest as well depending on what position it has been set at.

I don't think diesel fuel will have done any harm; it's not far off from being parafin/kerosene. Rinse the tank and carb with petrol.

Putting petrol in a, (high compression) diesel engine is likely to do harm.

Ooops, sorry Admin, that went off topic.

Hi thanks for the diagnosis of my broken kick start spring on my A 7 shooting star , I have the gearbox outer casing off now but do I have to remove the kick start quadrant (and if so how )to replace the spring ?
It doesn’t tell me in the heynes manual , thanks in advance Mike

The kickstart shaft will just slide out after removing the kickstart lever. The spring is held in place with a screw and locknut. Replace the spring, refit the shaft and kickstart lever. When refitting the cover you'll have to rotate the kickstart lever backward so that the quadrant won't foul the the quadrant stop bolt. Obviously youll need a new gasket and maybe a bit of gasket sealant.

G'day Greeny.
Looking at your pic, did you remove the nut on the outside and k/s anchor screw on the inside? If this comes out (by itself) the spring won't function.
Cheers
