Great to have you on the site, we love photo's!
Don't listen to all these gloom and doom merchants. These bikes are over 70 years old so one that's been off the road does need a good going over, (yes always worth flushing the sludge trap on any BSA or trumpet twin ). But they are simple bikes and if put together with a bit of care are amazingly robust. While I don't presently have a 500 on the road, I've ridden a mates star twin and that is such a sweetie, smooth as. No wonder these bikes earnt the Maudes trophy (worth reading about) for their ISDT exploits. My experience is mainly with the 650's but am building a 500 racer, thats how much faith I have in these motors.
Don't hesitate to ask, don't believe everything you hear, but on the whole you'll get useful support and direction.
