Full Width Cast Iron Hub
« on: 17.07. 2021 12:39 »
Anyone have any info regarding Mix'Match  interchange on the Cast Iron Full Width Front Hub? Looks as if they come in 7" and 8" drum, and the basic casting is also shared by some Triumph Models (BSA being the parent company for Triumph). The 7" Hub is used in the early A50 along with an 18" rim. Is this the same basic wheel as on the B40? The wheel bearings are common, so only the spindle and backplate may need to be changed to suit the fork leg width. New wheels are getting expensive, I've got some B40 legs, so just looking for something cheap to stop it dragging on the ground.

 One for Julian I think.

 Thanks.

The BSA (up to 1965 anyway) and the Triumph 7 inch hubs are slightly different cosmetically - BSA has 5 cooling ribs and Triumph 6 and different shape.

I think the 18 inch B40 and A50 wheels probably interchange - same rim and both 18 inch WM2 and both built centre line of hub to centre line of rim - but not the spindles. Brake plates also different.

The B40 brake side fork bottom has a narrower spindle lug and spindle cap than the A50/A65/A7/A10 type.

Thanks Julian. I have a selection of A7 Full Width Hubs, Spindles and Backplates. The cost of a rebuild with rim and spokes is prohibitive for what I want, so a cheap B40 wheel and a swap of spindle and backplate looks as if it will do the job. A 7" backplate  matches the fork lug of the B40 fork slider. Then again these sliders may not actually be B40.....
