1960 A7 side stand questions.
« on: 27.06. 2021 20:19 »

Hi, new to the forum so hope this is in correct area.

I'm looking for a side stand for my bike.
Frame as stated is an A7 from 1960.

Frame has a lug with hole on the nearside front of the frame.

Prior to asking on the for sale or wanted section I thought I might ask if their are any recommended suppliers of such parts in the UK?. I guess apart from the stand will need some springs and the bolt etc.

Don't want to use a jiffy stand and it seems on ebay etc they aren't exactly coming out of the woodwork... surely they aren't a rare part.

New to all thing regarding classic BSA's so please excuse me if it's a silly question.

Original sidestands are like hen’s teeth and priced accordingly. Many repro items are not worth risking as they’re prone to breaking. Lots of forum discussions previously - the search function can help you find those.

Thanks Terry.

I will try and locate one then.. the quest starts here.
This is all part of the process eh!.

Will try the wants section. And do a search as you suggest.  Never thought they would be scarce.

I have been told that my sidestand is from a Triumph.
That should give you another source to look at.

My bike is a 1958 A7SS

My bike came with a factory fitted stand mount but it had never had a stand. I bought a Triumph stand * and modified it. I basically shortened it and then added a foot. Later, I spotted a new old stock sidestand on eBay and fitted that. Someone here had my home-made version.

*The pivot dimensions are what count.

Hi Paul,
I have broken about three stands in the last 10 years. They have all broken at the same spot i.e. the lug where the bolt goes through the leg. On inspection the material has been very poor. Crumbly casting. All three were from India.
I eventually bit the bullet and got one from Burton bike bits. It wasn't cheap but looking back that's what I should have done in the first place. The stand is well made and looks the part. It's been in active service for a couple of years now without any problem. 1960 BSA A10.
I have had a few bits from Burtons and I must say that whoever does the quality control knows what they are about. Yes they are not cheap, but I want quality not a cheap price.
No I do not work for Burtons or have any link to them. I just like quality bits.
