OK he's got the head off and measuring for gasket thickness (never had a goldie so this is new to me).
Strange thing is when placing the head on without gasket it rocks front to back (side to side is fine) is this due to a possible mismatch of the flange on the cylinder and the recess in the head or something else, he says it does not rock with a gasket in place.
Not having any experience other than A10 and Ariel Arrow I ain't seen this before.

Hi Bill
There must be something either stuck in the flange recess or the head or liner is distorted ?
Put a small amount of fine grinding paste on top of the liner flange and rotate the head to and fro
This will show up any high or low spots
The heads can be distorted from previous improper fitting
I did up a 350GS a while ago where the gasket gap was uneven
I had to reface the flat gasket surface and then take a trueing up skim on the inner ring where the liner lip seals to
I did this by bolting the head to a lathe faceplate
