Tank or Amal ?
« on: 03.07. 2019 16:11 »
Just got my tank back from the paint shop. It was sand blasted first then the paint process. I looked inside with a torch and it looked clean ! Filled up with half a tank and fitted a chrome and glass posh petrol filter. All went OK initially. The filter picked up some fine black bits over a couple of start ups, then I noticed that the float needle was not shutting off. The carb was NOS about 8 years ago. I stripped the carb which looked clean, then the main jet came off of the jet holder which had snapped probably through over tightening. The float needle has a very slight mark on the Viton tip only visible by magnifying glass. I have ordered a new tip and main jet from Hitchcocks overnight post.
I have cleaned the fine bits out of the filter and flushed about three gallons of fuel through it and it remained clean.

Is there anything that can be in the petrol that is not visible to the naked eye. ??
Or could the Viton Tip be showing signs of age.

Thank you.

Check there is nothing to restrict the float movement, some monobloc floats foul on one of the float chamber cover screw retaining lugs inside the chamber when the carb has dried out and the float jams itself at the bottom of the float chamber.

Anything you can't see will pass the jets or block them up, either way its a simple fix. Float needles seal well enough to work even with appreciable signs of wear. Well worth removing the banjo filter and valve seat for a good looky look, some muck may be stuck on the seat.

Shame the bits got broken, like I say, assemble with care.

 Good luck sorting it out.

 Swarfy.

Thanks for reply, forgot to mention the carb has only done 700 miles from new, that's why I explained about the tanks recent history. Proud to say I did not fit the main jet.

New Viton Tip and main jet arrived today ( Overnight from Hitchcocks ). All fitted and no issues now. Fuel filter remains clean, to my eyes anyway.
