Air Filters for my 1960 A7SS
« on: 06.08. 2018 14:11 »
In all the years that I've used my Shooting Star it has never needed an air filter for the monobloc 376 carb. But, living in Spain where there is always lots of dust and fine grit I have come to the conclusion that the bore will soon be ruined if one is not fitted quickly.  *sad2*

So my questions are :-
1/ what type is best for my bike, having seen the modern Amal made conical type on their website, not sure if it will fit as its 77mm long.

2/ Is that the only type available?

3/ And most importantly, will the jets need changing, if so to what size etc.

I appreciate that most of you probably do not need air filters but here it is most essential so as not to ruin the engine. Any help or information please.

I use an S and B filter on my A10.

Hitchcocks stock them. They are better quality than the usual pancake filter and are washable. You need an adaptor to fit them.

G'day BSA Biker.
I like the washable one Julian suggests and cheaper than the dry paper pancakes on ebay but this one screws directly onto the carb https://tinyurl.com/y86lqkec.
Jetting may need to be a bit leaner, probably not much. one size (5) down on the main, clip up 1 notch and 1 size smaller pilot. I'd try it with the jetting you have first.

An all-rubber type that is held onto the screw threads of the air intake by a hose clip is more secure than a filter that screws on.

Hi Scotty,

So the Amal one fits into the gap between the back of the carb and the battery holder bracket okay?

Just fitted the Amal screw type on to my Super Rocket with concentric, but took me a while to get mixture correct.

Just ordered the Amal cone air filter today after asking "Amal" if the jets need changing, they do not think so, we shall see. *smile*
