Sloppy kick starter

My pattern folding kick starter is a sloppy fit on the kickstart spindle. The cotter pin is not able to pinch. The groove in the spindle for the cotter pin is very worn (original). Is this a common thing, or should a cotter pin be able to nip up the slop? I have a 0,5 mm slop between the outer diameter of the spindle (which is not worn) and the inner diameter of the (pattern) kick start crank.

0,5 mm play seems a lot to be pulled straight by the cotter pin.
But De Groot in Holland sells an oversize pin. At € 3 may be worth a try?

Yes some after market kickers are like that, the cotter hole is too far away from the spindle hole. The one on my cafe is like that. A new cotter will hold for a dozen kicks then needs pushing in a bit. After a few goes like that the cotter will push straight through. I have glued a strip of 1mm steel to the flat on the spindle which helps for a while.

Yes I've had this, cured it by looking around around for thicker cotter pins

If you have access to a lathe and a smooth file you could easily make up an oversize cotter pin. Or even find a bolt,(not a screw) that has a suitable shaft thickness and modify that to make a new oversize cotter.
