Amal 276 Jet Block Washer replacement

Hi All.

I bought a small repair kit from Amal to refurbish my 276 ( I think) carb. In the kit was a large diameter black washer which I think sits between the jet block and the mixing chamber union nut.

Try as I might, I can't remove the nut from the body of the carb to get to where I think the washer lives. I've applied frequent doses of penetrating oil and tried twisting the carb body with the nut in a vice. I'm reluctant to use any heat because of the age of the carb and I'm frightened I'll break it!

Any tips or ideas?  Thanks, Simon

I think I had trouble dismantling my one. I cannot remember if I did anything tricky to get it off. Heat is usually the answer but as you say, you don't want to bugger the carb. What about popping it in boiling water for a while?

Yep, that and a few gentle taps on the nut with a mallet will do it. You need to check the ID of that washer when it's in place as some repro ones are wide enough to partially cover the internal passage and need easing with a file at the relevant spot.

Just to let you know that I managed it in the end - more Plusgas over the weekend, tonight I heated up the nut in boiling water, into a vice and a little leverage help from a tight fitting bar in the throat of the carb. Off it came.

I'm glad I persisted, the old gasket looks to be in a poor way. I'll make sure that the new one from Amal fits as it should.
