« on: 21.01. 2022 23:09 »
Sorry guys left manual at work, when tearing down a a10 motor do you remove the whole top end 1st then remove the right side cover and all the gears or is it best to leave the barrel on or does it matter? Thanks

I remove the top end because its easier to lift out as I get on in yrs ... then the primary side the engine will come out the right side ....princess auto / harbor freight sell a small scissor lift around 80 bucks .....I use that to take the weight of the motor makes it easier to get the bolts out and put the motor back in .....mark the oil lines so you dont mix them up on re assembly .....an engine stand comes in handy ....bag and tag everything .

G'day Mario.
I too strip as much off as possible with the lump in the frame. Primary first then top end before the timing gears. That way there's no chance of turning the motor with the gears not engaged and bending a valve. A small timber wedge can be used to lock the pinions to remove the nuts.

Thanks guys

And once the rebuild begins do you put in the complete bottom end into the frame then put the top end on afterwards? Or once the entire motor is done then drop it in as a whole?

When rebuilding the engine I tend to fit the top end whilst it is still on the bench. That way you can see the tappets to locate them when fitting the rocker box. I fit the dynamo plates, throw a heavy blanket over the frame rails then drop the engine in place and jiggle it forwards until one of the holes lines up with the frame downtubes.

I'm with you on that CheeserB. Bit heavy, but so much easier & quicker to get barrels, pistons and head on (and do the rocker box on Beesas) on the bench.
Any engine that can come out in one normally does come out in one hereabouts.
(While the Force Remains with Me, anyway  . . . dunno how long that will be for though  . . .!)

It a lot easier to locate pushrods, set tappets etc with the motor out and on a stand , i like to prime the pump before i put the head on , saves my knee trying to kick it over .
Also easier setting timing and crank end play with a stand . Not hard to make if you have a welder.

One more question is I went to remove the mag and am not sure how.Removed the 2 nuts and the long bolt holding the mag and went and undid the center bolt on the cover side and it does not come off? Is that center bolt not to come off? It undoes about a 1/4 inch then stops.I could wait till tomorrow and look at a manual but I’m to excited to remove it. Thanks

If its the magneto gear nut/bolt that is giving you problems, and it has a advance/retard type gear, then the nut/bolt has a “dual function” to pull the gear off its taper when it is undone, and that might give the impression it is stuck when being undone.

Yes, just keep turning, past the tight spot, as it is an extractor.
