One of the features mentioned in the article was chromed control-cable guides that run along the handlebars. Does anybody here have these? They don't show up in my parts book and I don't believe I've ever seen them.

I think 42-4996 is the cable guide.

Thanks Julian, that's interesting. They came later than shown in my 54-56 parts book. I should have known you could come up with it, as I'm sure you have every parts book from the beginning to 1996 . I think the guides could maybe even be found for sale, but still curious if folks here have them mounted.

Browsing "Just a Picture", I see a few members' bikes with the cable guides. Aside form the cable guides, the news here is "Just a Picture" serving as intended.

Richard, my 63 West Coast SR had the cowhorn bars with cable guides on it when it arrived last year. I tried to like the cowhorn bars but just couldn't get used to the arms in the air position. It felt especially weird when trying to do a speedy ride down a twisty road. I finally changed to UK style bars and now feel much more confident when putting the bike thru it's paces.
The original Cowhorn bars are in my box of spare bits, won't throw them out as the next owner might treasure them.

Your friends at Burton Bike Bits have them at about 8 GBP, I think.

I have western bars but I'm not planning on getting any. I think they must add to some cable restriction.
