1960 a10 chaincase oil capacity

A few months ago I fitted a new stainless level/drain tube onto my chain case. Filled it with oil till it came out of the level tube and waited till it stopped. A few rides later and the clutch was dragging like mad with no chance of selecting neutral. It wasn't the best clutch in the world but I managed with it. I removed the outer case and stripped the clutch, it was soaking wet no wonder the plates were not separating. I decided to go with a new SRM clutch which I was very pleased with the quality and good installation instructions that came with it. I did ask them on the amount of oil I should put in the chain case and they said 190cc just so the bottom of the chain gets a little oil to lubricate it. I am now filling the case with oil and 190cc doesn't come anywhere near the chain so it took 310cc to just wet the bottom of the chain, does that sound about right. I can't rely on the level plug until I get some feedback on quantity, I'm sure somebody will have the answers as I don't want to ruin my new clutch.

The correct amount of oil for the primary is 225cc or 0.4 of a pint, I never rely on level plugs as it all depends on if the bike is on level ground and if the bike is level I just put in the correct amount.

Hi Ellis,
As the chaincase is kind of egg shaped the clutch end is lower than where you can see in the inspection hole
so it will be sitting in oil before you can see oil in the inspection hole
I'm presuming your 1960 has the combined drain and level plug rather than the two screws shown in Morris's post
The level tube sticks out of the drain plug 7/8in
It has happened that a similar plug (from I think a C15 gearbox?) that has a longer tube being fitted
resulting in overfilling of the primary case

That's what I was worried about over filling the chain case. I will take the level tube out and measure it to see if it is the correct length.

Just checked the level tube and as you say John it is 7/8in. With the bike sat on its wheels on level ground 225cc doesn't put oil on to the chain. I add a little oil and turn the motor over each time to check if it has reached the chain. I add oil until I just see a small amount  just wetting the chain and the quantity of oil is  310cc. Take the drain plug out of the level plug and just a few drops come out. So surly the capacity must be 310cc.

I never bothered to measure the amount
I just fill to the level tube
I use Castrol 10/40 motorcycle oil

I also use Castrol 10/40 motorcycle oil as recommended by SRM. I'm just following SRM instruction for the oil just to touch the bottom of the chain as I said, it does take 310cc to do that but that's with a dry chain case. I have drained the oil out which will not get all the oil out, so today I will fill it back up and see how much it takes. I will post the results later.

With a totally dry chain case you will have to put in 310cc of oil to bring it up to just touch the bottom of the chain. If you are just changing the oil you will need 190cc to touch the bottom of the chain with the bike on level ground.

ooh an oil thread 
I fill mine until it comes out the tube and use straight 30 obtained from the local mower shop in a litre bottle, simple budget lightweight oil, I recall its for briggs and stratton's but most mowers run on 30.
