cam ring glued in?

 For something that is supposed to be a "sliding fit", this cam ring is mighty tight.

 I cannot tell if its just oil or if thats some type of glue, but I cannot shift it.

 Is there a trick to this thing?

Auto mag cam rings are seldom a sliding fit.

Usually neeeds a bit of heat to help.

Sometimes they get fitted with loctite if a bit lose.

Yup, often hard to extract. A weapon is often needed, with something to push against to protect the female taper on the armature (and not shove the fastener at the bottom of the hole into the HT coil) if doing it with the mag assembled. I removed the points and the cam ring housing.

 It was full of locktite like you thought guys. As soon as it was good and warm it broke free.

 I had to mess around with the points gap again. I thought I had it last time until I realised the self aligning end cover clip screw was none too tight.

Once I tighten that, things were out of wack again.

Now I used 1 and 2 thousandth brass shim stock behind the cam ring. Point gap is now 13 and 12, but I won't know firing degrees until I reinstall mag.

 I hope this is the end of mag troubles for a while...

 Unbelievable.

 I ended up with 12 and 13 for points gaps and 32 and 33 degrees for firing.

 This had nothing to do with skill at all, it was complete luck *ex*

I am really hoping this thing will fire the bike. I have owned it for 27 years now and have never heard it so much as cough out an exhaust pipe.

 I would like to give a complete magneto rebuild a try in the winter months, but there is just to many secrets. Like how many turns of primary and secondary wire to fool with it. Trying to build  a coil winder would be good winter fun though, it gets very cold here and working in the garage is out for 5-6 month a year.

 But sending mags off to get worked on here in the states just does not work out. Matter of fact they seem to come back worse off then when they left. *sad2*

I know it's not OEM, but rather than mess about with points on the original mag etc I bit the bullet and bought a BTH electronic mag, I had hassle with it cos the timing method it comes with sucked, but since then..... 6000 trouble free no maintenance miles  *smile*

The original mag is on the shelf and will go with the bike...when I'm unable to ride it any more  *problem*

 That would have been a cheaper option if I would have went that route from the start.

 If this does not work out, thats what I will get. It looks enough like original, and I really like the "trouble free" part. *smile*
