Positioning of the Regulator in Toolbox
« on: 19.07. 2016 06:37 »
Hello Folks, Susie back again  *smiley4*

I have to replace the original voltage regulator as it is now faulty. Just picked up a new solid state unit.

I am considering to mount the new one inside the toolbox and wondered if anybody else had ever done this.
Is there any need for the regulator to air flow over it whilst bike is moving. Inside the toolbox this would not be possible but then again I don't think mounting it in the original regulator housing would do that either?
Apart form the non standard look, any reasons why should not be doing this?

Cheers

Craig

I have all my solid state regulators in the toolboxes. Running three A10's and never had a problem. I tend not to jam the toolbox full of other stuff so the regulators have a bit of airspace around them.

Yeah - I too run a solid state unit in my toolbox. I'd kind of been concerned about airflow and cooling, but thinking about it now I also have a return side oil filter in there which actually must surely cook things up even further. Hmmmm.

I have a DVR2 inside the body of the original regulator. Nice and subtle. My toolbox is already stuffed, with a rag, a tool roll, cable repair kit, spare plugs and bulbs.

Yeah – that’s another down side of sticking the filter in there. Barely leaves room for an emergency condom

Weeeelll by the time you've found a coin to open the toolbox. it's quite possible the finishing line had been crossed ;)

Here's my take on the solid-state regulator inside the original electromechanical case. Note the home-made aluminum mounting plate acting as a heat sink with ventilation holes.

My reg box is the type with a removable cover held on by a wire clip. There are already holes in the base plus the cover doesn't exactly fit tightly so I haven't worried about heat, plus, I'm sure the DVR2 blurb says it can be fitted inside an old regulator box.

Greybeard, it does say just that, and that is how I have fitted my DVR2, inside the box. "Fits comfortabley inside Miller or lucas case" is what it says on the DVR2 website.
