clutch pull

Hi guys,

The 6 spring clutch on my 57 RR is much harder to pull in than the 4 spring unit on my 61 GF.  Is that to be expected?  The 57 is definitley NOT an around town bike unless I hit the gym a LOT more!  The clutch works well as adjusted, but if I loosen up on the spring tension it will slip.  Opinions?

I’m running a 6 spring on my ’58 iron head. I had to pull down the springs a little after getting some slip after running in, but whilst it is a good pull compared with more modern conveyances it is manageable. And I’m generally considered to be pretty limp wristed.

Yes I also have a 6 spring on my bb 33...I have been having fun and games as well ..what I have found with a 'repro' rear gearbox cover fitted is, that the hole the cable runs through makes the clutch very stiff ? or so it would seem ...Still I shall remove said cover tomorrow and see ...Good luck .

Hi Seabee, the six spring clutch on my plunger can easily be pulled with 2 fingers on the lever. Although of a little bit different type than yours I can see no reason why yours should be much harder to pull?
Maybe the wrong type of springs (to stiff or to long)? The fact that it starts to slip when you loosen the springs points somewhat in that direction.

The old six-spring on my 59' was tougher to pull than the clutch on my Maico Magnum.  I had to make brass ends for the cables because it used to pull the original lead ends off.  The clutch basket had notches from the fiber plates and it never worked that well either.  I guess some perform better than others.
