Help identifying this BSA please!
« on: 17.03. 2015 21:30 »
Hi everyone, thanks for accepting me into the forum!

I wondered whether anyone might be able to help me identify the bike in the attached picture.  It belonged to my Dad who was stationed with the RAF in Singapore - he recently passed away and we found this old photograph of him on the bike with my Mum when they first met.  I am not entirely sure what year it was but think it was an A7 500 twin (with rear plunger suspension) - if anyone can help with any further information I would be most grateful...!

Many thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to this forum.
Nice picture. I'd say you're right guessing it's an A7. Looks like it's somewhere around 1955 or later because it has the dual seat, although this was already available earlier as an option. The front brake's a 7" and to my knowledge this brake was only used on the A7 at that time.
Maybe someone can/will correct me on this?

The bike doesn't have the cowpat style headlamp cowl, (like mine) plus it doesn't have the deeply valenced front mudguard, (like mine) so I'd say it's pre '55

I'm fairly sure its a 1952 A7.

1952 was the only year with the underslung pilot lamp which I think I can see in the picture.'53 had the cowl and '51 had the pilot light in the lense.

G'day Mike  *welcome*
Yep, I recon Brian is on the money. Same as my 51 bar the pilot light.
Cheers

Given the plate number and British efficiency in keep records, would it not be possible to track down the exact information and, maybe, current owner or disposition of the bike? Maybe check with the "Ministry of Transportation" (or whatever it's called; here, "Department of Motor Vehicles") or with the BSAOC.

Brian certainly nailed it and presumably the S prefix meant Singapore.
Lovely bike

Good luck with finding out more, over here anything that wasnt registered after 1982 isnt able to be traced back.
A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.
