276 carb fuel level

Hi all, I have recently got a 53 A10 plunger, I've had a couple of swing arm ones in the past, but this is the first one with a 276 carb. I was wondering which slot the clip sits in on the float needle? And can I take the top off the float bowl and turn the petrol on to check the fuel level? If so where should the fuel level be, how far from the top? Also when I tickle it fuel gushes out from somewhere around the throttle block, and it takes ages to stop is that normal, sorry for all the questions but it's the first time I've had to deal with these carbs, cheers Tony.

 I have had several bikes with these carbs., both old original ones from the 40s/50s, and a new one from Burlen (Amal). The petrol appearing at the base of the jet block when tickling the carb. is normal, and should stop when the float level falls to normal.
 You can get an idea of the fuel level with the float chamber top removed, but the top centralises the float needle so it may not seat properly without it fitted.
 On the carbs I have had there is only one notch on the shank of the float needle so not really designed to be adjustable.

Hi , a long time since I looked at a 276 carb but as you probably have it stripped down to ask about notches on the needle if there are more than one fit to the middle one and adjust by checking plug colour .
