Air Filter '59 A10
« on: 23.02. 2013 10:59 »
Hi
My new bike doesn't have an air filter fitted. I see that part number 42-4582 is widely available on ebay but is listed as fitting models from '54-'58. Does it also fit a '59? In the '59 instruction manual there's a diagram of the bike which seems to show an airfilter like 42-4582, but is it the same or can it be fettled. Anyone got a '59 parts book they can check?

The difficult part is actually fitting it because you need to get a piece of rubber hose to fit over the filter and the carb whilst fitting the filter at the same time.

Or you could just use the correct adapter and garter springs.
In my experience, though, the adapters were made from rubber which is soluble in petrol!

Thanx for the feedback chaps.
Got one now which has lugs top and bottom. The bottom one bolts in place ok, but the top one has nowhere to go because of the battery clamp. I was looking yesterday at a mate's '62 A7 which he's rebuilding and his battery carrier has a captive nut, to attach the top lug to, but mine doesn't.

Ethelred,
You should have the three piece battery clamp which is unlike the '62 one piece battery box.
The front vertical strap should have a boss, tapped 2BA, rivetted to it for the top air cleaner screw.
The problem these days is with pattern straps. They don't have the boss so you have to make and fit one.
