I had my tank chromed by ACF Howells - it cost £360 including tax! They did a lovely job that included heavy copper plating to fill rust pitting before polishing for chrome.
After painting and lining, (another £300) you only see about a quarter of the chrome, but I understand that's the way is has to be done.

A friend panelbeater told me there's a new paint that is very very close to chrome. I'll have to find out more.

... and it only cost 425 GBP to chrome that little car body. I didn't count the number of steps, but it was several. At the end, it looked like he was demonstrating that the tape would not pull off the finish, but a little pulled away and he quickly stopped the video.

Muskrat, It's funny that you should mention that. Last night, or maybe it was the night before, I watched a programme on one of our TV channels called "The Motor Bike Show". The programme featured a bloke that was building a trick custom bike. The bike had an ally frame, and the original intention was to polish the frame to a mirror finish, however the polisher was unable to completely remove all of the paint from the nooks and crannies of the welds. The decision was taken to powder coat the frame, and the powder coater mentioned that they had developed a coating that was virtually indistinguishable from chrome. Unfortunately he said, there was one draw back, and that was that the coating was not fully UV stable. He then went onto say that he could over spray the chrome coating with a lacquer that would make it look like brass so that is what was done. The chrome coat looked absolutely convincing. It really did look like chrome, and the brass effect looked equally convincing. As an aside the EEC commissioners in their wisdom are considering Europe wide legislation that will ban chrome plating throughout the whole of Europe.
