                The horrible fabricated stand was definitely fitted in 1958.
It seems that in 1959 some time the cast stand was fitted, a definite improvement over both of the earlier stands.
The best feature of the first stand (1954-7) was the mounting, it pivoted on a sleeve captured between 2 lugs on the frame. It didn't wear out the mounting lugs if everything was kept tight.
With the late stand, I drill and tap both mounting lugs and fit grub screws to hold the pivot pin in place and stop it wearing the frame, after repairs, of course.

The spike on the left leg sticks in the ground when you turn left, even with 19" wheels. I ended up cutting most of mine off.

We used to just grind them off on corners, resulted in non waterproof shoes due to sharp edge and poor leather.

I bought a stand from Burton bike bits uk, for my 56 same as you need 4" between frame lugs 59.50 gbp plus 38gbp freight to new Zealand but I also bought all the other stand parts distance tube spring etc plus some clutch plates plus a few other parts which bumped the weight up.

Seems strong enough, doesnt have the foot extension, with the freight they are pricy but I think any US supplier will probably charge more and I think burtons will be more likely to supply a good quality part.

I had to grind a fair bit off the stops as otherwise it was too low to the ground but that might be a good thing if your frame is worn where the stand rests against it.

Got my stand yesterday, gave it a good clean and seems it will fit perfectly once I've got my lugs repaired.
One thing though. The grease nipple seems to be false. The nipple centre on top wont move, the underside has no hole and the actual stand itself has no hole  through from the nipple to the pivot? Presume a working grease nipple is an optional extra!!!!
